As part of Shtetl Berlin’s project ‘Undzer Shtetl, Unsere Stadt’, we are proud to share these short spotlight videos made for social media, highlighting a few of the many people in our community working with Jewish and Yiddish culture in diverse and meaningful ways.

The project was conceived and produced by Craig Judelman, with assistance from Sasha Lurje, Patrick Farrell, Elisabeth Mann and the whole Shtetl Team. Graphics by Christian Dawid, videos by Magdalena Hutter and social media strategy and management by Adrian Schnug. Sasha Lurje and Craig Judelman are musicians, educators, and cultural activists dedicated to exploring and presenting Yiddish song. They are prominent figures in the global Yiddish cultural community and with Patrick Farrell direct Shtetl Berlin.

Shelley Etkin

Shelley Etkin is a transdisciplinary artist/researcher who works with relations between bodies and lands centering plants and herbal medicine as allies in ancestral repair and solidarity.

Benyamin Reich

Benyamin Reich creates theatrically staged photographs exploring tensions between his Orthodox Jewish heritage and contemporary identity. His provocative work challenges religious aesthetic restrictions, examining sexuality, gender, and deeply personal transformation.

Darja Klingenberg

Darja Klingenberg is a scholar learning and teaching about Russian and Ukrainian Speaking Jewish and non-jewish migrants in Germany, German memory culture and feminist materialist theory.

Craig Judelman

Hila Amit is a queer Sephardic Jew working as a writer and a Hebrew teacher.

Lolita VaVoom

Lolita Va Voom is a burlesque performer, producer, and educator. She produces Jews! Jews! Jews!, a progressive queer Jewish cabaret, and through her Shimmy Shake School of Burlesque, teaches the working class and queer history of the art of the (strip)tease.

Jake Schneider

Jake Schneider is a Yiddish activist, poet, translator, collagist, and independent researcher whose projects often create spaces for living Yiddish.

Jalda Rebling

Chasan Jalda Rebling grew up with the songs of her mother, the legendary Yiddish singer Lin Jaldati (1912-1988). Jalda created the first international Yiddish festival in Berlin; discovered early Ashkenazi Jewish music; co-created one of the first egalitarian synagogues in Berlin; & is director of studies at the European Academy for Jewish Liturgy in London.
