Learn more about Yiddish culture, its roots, history, and performance practice in the context of a supportive and diverse international community.

Featuring some of the world's leading performers and educators, Shtetl Berlin offers workshops in Klezmer music and Yiddish song, as well as dance.

Looking for a workshop where you don't have to play, sing or dance?

We're thrilled to announce for the first time a series of lectures on topics. If you aren’t a musician or dancer but want to learn from a diverse group of speakers from Germany and beyond, this is the ideal opportunity for you. Click below for more info and the full schedule!

What to expect in our workshops:

While basic proficiency on your instrument is encouraged we welcome everyone to our workshops, even if you simply want to sit quietly in the back and experience the process.

Our workshops meet in large groups - much of the time instrumentalists are in one group and vocalists in another, sometimes joining together and sometimes splitting into smaller groups based on a particular topic such as melody/accompaniment.

We don’t expect anyone to learn everything about Yiddish music in one weekend, but we do strive to create workshops that offer something for people at all levels to learn while also stressing the communal aspect of music making and taking the time to enjoy being together.

To accomplish this, our workshops always focus on a couple main songs and tunes to learn over the weekend, and balance this with sessions focused on technique, ensemble playing, rhythm/sensibility and musical and historical context.

In order to register for the workshops either purchase a festival weekend pass or a day pass for Saturday or Sunday workshops.

Our Faculty

Our faculty are all deeply invested in studying, performing and teaching Yiddish music, having dedicated themselves for years to this culture.

Please note - Faculty may not be specifically teaching the instrument they play.
