Play Sing and Dance with Us!

Learn more about Yiddish Culture, its roots, history, and performance practice in the context of a supportive and diverse international community.

Shtetl Berlin’s annual festival offers workshops in Klezmer music and Yiddish song, as well as dance classes with some of the world’s leading performers and educators.

We're thrilled to announce for the first time a series of lectures on topics ranging from poetry to history, religion and local Berlin Yiddish Geography. If you aren’t a musician but want to learn from a diverse group of speakers from Germany and beyond, this is the ideal opportunity for you.

Workshops

Shtetl Berlin is dedicated to deepening the appreciation of Yiddish music and culture for all interested individuals. While basic proficiency on your instrument is encouraged we welcome everyone to our workshops, even if you simply want to sit quietly in the back and experience the process.

Our workshops are meet in large groups - mostly all instrumentalists are in one group and vocalists in another, sometimes joining together and sometimes splitting into smaller groups based on instrument or a particular topic such as melody/accompaniment. Participants will be guided by our incredible, generous and knowledgeable faculty throughout the weekend, along with special guests leading ‘spotlight’ sessions on a particular subject.

We don’t expect anyone to learn everything there is to know about Yiddish music in one weekend, but we do strive to create workshops that offer something for people at all levels to learn while also stressing the communal aspect of music making and taking the time to enjoy being together. To accomplish this, our workshops always focus on a couple key songs and tunes to learn over the weekend, and balance this with sessions focused on technique, ensemble playing, rhythm/sensibility and musical and historical context.

In order to register for the workshops either purchase a festival weekend pass or a day pass for Saturday or Sunday workshops.

Our Faculty

Our faculty are all deeply invested in studying, performing and teaching Yiddish music, having dedicated themselves for years to this culture. Spend the weekend learning from these incredible artists and take home inspiration to continue learning until next year!

Spotlight Sessions

We also offer highlight sessions on specific subjects.
