Neukölln Klezmer Sessions

Neukölln Klezmer Sessions: A living klezmer tradition in Berlin’s most diverse neighborhood

The Neukölln Klezmer Sessions are the longest-running tradition of Shtetl Berlin and have become a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life. What began as an intimate gathering initiated by Ilya Shneyveys, Emil Goldschmidt, and Hampus Melin has grown into a vibrant, internationally known event that attracts musicians, dancers, and listeners from all backgrounds.

For Everyone, Always

At their heart, the sessions are open to all – from professional klezmer musicians to curious first-timers. Each evening begins with a tune-learning session, where newcomers and seasoned players alike can add new melodies to their repertoire in a supportive, communal atmosphere. After that, the night unfolds into a high-energy, collective session guided by a house band that helps keep the music flowing and accessible for all participants.

Our Home in Neukölln

The sessions take place at Bar Oblomov, a beloved Neukölln institution that perfectly embodies the spirit of the event. With its Italian drinks, warm hospitality, and lively temperament, Oblomov provides the ideal backdrop for a celebration of klezmer that reflects the diverse, colorful, and dynamic community of the neighborhood.

Free, Inclusive, and Joyful

The Neukölln Klezmer Sessions are always free of charge, always inclusive, and designed to create a welcoming space where people of all ages, identities, and levels of experience can come together. The atmosphere is wild, raucous, and full of joy – an explosion of sound, rhythm, and connection that breaks down barriers and celebrates shared creativity.

Known Around the World

Over the years, the Neukölln Klezmer Sessions have earned a reputation far beyond Berlin. They are recognized by klezmer musicians and communities across Europe and North America as a unique hub of creativity, spontaneity, and tradition, rooted in local culture yet connected to global networks of Jewish and folk music.

Shtetl Berlin’s Beating Heart

As Shtetl Berlin continues to expand with festivals, workshops, and cultural projects, the Neukölln Klezmer Sessions remain its beating heart: the place where the community gathers month after month to celebrate klezmer as a living, evolving tradition that thrives in the heart of Berlin.
