There is a free testing center around the corner from Forum Factory. A negative test from Saturday morning, December 4, will be valid for both Shtetl Fest and the Jam Session on December 5.
We will also be conducting contact tracing at our events. Please have the Corona-Warn-App on your smartphone when you arrive, if at all possible.

SHTETL FEST SCHEDULE
11:00 - Registration and Welcome
12:00 - Session 1
Song Workshop
with your Shtetl Berlin team, led by Sveta Kundish and Sasha Lurje
Learn Yiddish songs in a spirit of togetherness, with a special focus on Khanike, led by two of the best Yiddish singers in all of Germany.
Instrumental Workshop
with Christian Dawid
We'll take a bit of classic dance repertoire and work on style, groove and ensemble interaction. Make some good klezmer tunes sound even better!
14:00 - Session 2
Instrumental Workshop
with your Shtetl Berlin team, led by Christian Dawid, Patrick Farrell, and Craig Judelman
Klezmer melodies chosen especially for how they will make you dance, led by your humble team of klezmorim and longstanding instigators and leaders of the Neukölln Klezmer Sessions.
“Khanike-gelt”: a Yiddish Theater Lab
with our good friends from Yiddish Berlin, led by Arndt Beck and Ekaterina Kuznetsova
We invite you to dive into the spirit of Khanike in the shtetl with Sholem Aleichem’s short play “Khanike-gelt”.
"Khanike-gelt" is a children's play which describes a typical holiday setting in a Eastern European Jewish town. The main characters - two boys Motl and Sholem - are on the hunt for money which their numerous relatives have given them as gifts for Khanike.
We will start with a short introduction of the text and the writer, and then will read the play together with you!
Yiddish-speakers of all levels are welcome: everyone will have the Yiddish text, a transliteration, and translation. All can choose to either participate actively and become an actor in this play or just listen!
We will have limited copies of printouts available. If possible, please download one (or all!) of the files below to print out for yourself, or to have in digital form on your own device.

16:00 - Session 3
Dance Workshop
with your Shtetl Berlin team, led by Sayumi Yoshida
Klezmer, dance, Yiddishkayt, tradition and modernity. All of these flow together in a dance workshop of a special kind. This introduction to the core repertoire of Yiddish dance offers the opportunity to get an insight into its diverse possibilities of expression. These are dance forms that have already brought people through several pandemics over the centuries, and also bring healing community into our isolated times. No previous knowledge is required.
17:30 - End of Day
Maybe a Jam Session? Maybe a Khanike candle-lighting? Let's see what we create together!
18:00 - Break
19:00 - Doors open for Evening Program
19:30 - Book Presentation
"Richard Wagner und die Klezmerband. Der neue jüdische Sound in Deutschland"
with author Yuriy Gurzhy
Join our friend and colleague Yuriy Gurzhy as he speaks about his brand-new book, which presents an overview of the contemporary Jewish music scene in Germany. The book features interviews with many of the familiar faces from Shtetl Berlin, as well as with colleagues from other parts of Germany and farther abroad. We're excited to hear about it!!
20:30 - The Shtetl Fest Show!
According to new Covid regulations in Berlin, our Saturday evening event will NOT LEAD TO DANCING! Instead, we’ll present a variety show of Berlin’s finest Yiddish activities - instrumental and vocal performances, Yiddish poetry readings, seated dancing and of course jam sessions!
