SHTETL BERLIN 2020 - EVENING EVENTS and CONCERTS
All event times are Berlin, (GMT+1).
All events will take place online.
SUNDAY December 6
18:00 - BAGEL BAKING WORKSHOP with Laurel Kratochvila
co-presented with KlezKanada and Fine Bagels
THURSDAY December 10
20:00 - 21:00 HANUKKAH TISH
co-presented with Base Berlin and Fraenkelufer Synagogue
Take a virtual seat at the Hanukkah Tish in this special pre-festival evening live from Fraenkelufer Synagogue's Kiddush room, co-hosted with Base Berlin and Fraenkelufer Synagogue!
Shtetl Berlin's Sasha Lurje and Craig Judelman will host a short evening event with special guest and Kaballah scholar Avinoam Stillman. We'll light candles and get in the festive mood with some Hasidic nigunim and special Hannukah melodies (hint: we love Breslov!). Avinoam will also give a talk about Hanukkah Hasidus and music: How is it possible to create meaning with dreidels and light in the midst of chaos and darkness?
The Hanukkah Tish will be streamed live via Facebook on both the Shtetl Berlin and Fraenkelufer pages as well as on Base Berlin's Instagram page, so simply log on to any of these pages (you don't need to be a member of Facebook to view the event there), fry up some treats, decorate your table at home, light the first candle with us and enjoy a Hanukkah treat.
FRIDAY December 11
19:00 - 19:45 SHTETL WELCOME SESSION
All registered participants are invited to join in for a big community-wide Zoom session, where we'll say hello, drink a lekhayim, and learn a nign or two! We'll have a festive Shtetl Berlin 2020 kick-off and get the weekend started right.
20:00 - 21:30 SHABES IN SHTETL
Join Shtetl Berlin Online for our first official 2020 event, Shabes in Shtetl! Friday night is traditionally a time when Jewish people gather to sing and to talk, to eat and to drink. Inspired by this practice, we’ll get together around our own virtual Shtetl Berlin Shabes Tish.
We’ll sing Shabes songs spanning the Yiddish cultural and sacred traditions, hear cantorial improvisations, enjoy stories and informal conversations and connect virtually and spiritually. At the end of the evening we'll premiere the brand-new Neukölln Klezmer Sessions socially-distanced video of our dear friend Michael Alpert’s Yiddishland anthem “Klaybt zikh tsunoyf” (“Gather Together”)!
Shtetl Berlin Shabes Tish is hosted by Cantor Sarah Myerson and Ilya Shneyveys (joining from Brooklyn, New York) and features beloved members of the Shtetl family, including Cantor Sveta Kundish, Patrick Farrell, Craig Judelman and Michael Alpert.
While this event draws on Jewish religious practices, you don’t have to be Jewish or religious to join the celebration. All you need is an open heart and a good internet connection (and maybe a snack and a drink to make a lekhayim together!).
Festival participants are welcome to join the Zoom event. This event will also be live-streamed on the Shtetl Berlin Facebook page for the wider community.
SATURDAY December 12
19:30 - 20:45 SHTETL BERLIN ALL-STARS
co-presented with Jewish Museum Berlin
For many years now, the Hanukkah concerts of the Shtetl Berlin Yiddish Culture Festival (formerly known as Shtetl Neukölln) and the Jewish Museum Berlin have cast a ray of light into the dark Berlin winter. In this special event, we present some of the brightest stars of the Berlin Yiddish Music scene: members of the organizing team of Shtetl Berlin!
Join us for this gala performance featuring music by Alan Bern, Christian Dawid, Craig Judelman, Daniel Kahn, Sasha Lurje, and Sanne Möricke, with a special dance performance from Yeva Lapsker and Sayumi Yoshida. The Shtetl Berlin All-Stars, performing live from the Glass Courtyard of the Jewish Museum, brings an audience together online to celebrate the Festival of Lights through song, music, and dance. Berlin’s Yiddish community is alive, strong, together, and ready to light candles and celebrate with you!
Festival participants are welcome to join the Zoom watch-party. This event will also be live-streamed through the Jewish Museum's YouTube channel, or right here:
