About the event
Early Jewish Music Concert
Long before klezmer echoed through the shtetls of Eastern Europe, Ashkenazi Jewish culture was born in the medieval Rhine Valley, where Jewish and German musical traditions grew side by side for centuries. On June 11, Shtetl Berlin presents a rare evening devoted to these deep and often forgotten roots. Two of the world's foremost early Jewish music ensembles, Simkhat Hanefesh and Ensemble Lucidarium, bring to life songs, dances, and liturgical melodies from Renaissance and Baroque Germany and Italy — repertoire that almost no one else in the world performs, and that reveals just how intertwined Jewish and Christian musical cultures once were, long before the road east. Before the concert, the performers will give a short introductory talk about their research and this extraordinary material. Both ensembles will also offer workshops and lectures as the festival continues at ufa Fabrik on June 13 & 14.
