Workshops at Shtetl Neukölln
For generations the only true way of passing on folk music and culture has been through listening, observing and repeating the songs, tunes and dances until they sound, look and feel like the original. This tradition lives on in the Yiddish music and dance workshops at Shtetl Neukölln.
A team of renowned world-class experts offers workshops in klezmer music, Yiddish dance and Yiddish song. The three workshops run parallel to each other most of the time, while coming together at the beginning and the end of each day to learn common repertoire, share the knowledge learned in separate classes and play, sing and dance together. Besides instrument classes and group sessions there is time for informal musical and personal interactions between the participants, encouraging new friendships and collaborations that last long after the festival is over.
Musicians and dancers of all levels are welcome to attend the workshops, from professional performers to folks with no musical background. Our faculty will work towards accommodating the needs of every participant, regardless of their level and Yiddish experience. Of course, as the workshops only last for a few days one cannot expect to learn everything about Yiddish culture, but rather to open the door into a new musical world, make new friends and have a good time!
Klezmer music workshop
Originally traditional wedding music of the Jews of Eastern Europe, klezmer has long become an essential part of the World music scene in Germany and all over the planet. Many musicians are hooked on to it because of its intricate yet catchy melodies, expressive ornamentation and raw dance energy. A wild blend of elements from balkan, middle-eastern and western classical music as well as jazz and pop music creates a unique sound loved by so many.
Among the subjects taught at the instrumental workshop are repertoire, phrasing, ornamentation, harmony, rhythm, improvisation, ensemble playing, historical context of klezmer music.
Yiddish song workshop
The body of Yiddish song repertoire spans across styles and genres, from unaccompanied folk ballads to revolutionary and resistance songs, to yiddish theatre to classical and contemporary avant-garde works to reggae and punk-rock! Our expert faculty will guide the students across the different repertoires (beyond Tum Balalaika!), working on Yiddish pronunciation, phrasing, ornamentation, voice production and context among other topics. You don’t have to speak Yiddish to take this workshop!
Yiddish dance workshop
Yiddish dance is a great way to bring people together. The steps are simple, but so much fun to dance! There are circle dances and couple dances as well as a unique solo dance style which allows for great expressiveness.
Students will learn about the history and modern use of various dances - hora (zhok), freylekhs, bulgar, khusidl, terkisher, sirba, kolomeyke, sher and many more.
You don’t have to be a professional dancer to take this workshop, Yiddish dance is for everyone!
